The Power of the Pivot

by Rochelle Durruthy

Pivot, Pivot, Pivot!

We’ve all heard Ross yell it in Friends, but today, I want you to hear it in your own life.

For so long, we’ve been told we need to find our one career path, go to college, get a degree, land the 9-to-5, and stay put. But if you’re living in today’s world, you know that the traditional work model isn’t working for everyone, especially if you’re a mother, struggling to make ends meet, or simply feeling unfulfilled.

This is your reminder: It’s OK to pivot.

It’s OK to change careers.

It’s OK to start over.

It’s OK to step into something new that excites you.

I’m a firm believer in multiple streams of income because I know that life ebbs and flows. Yes, I have a 9-to-5. But I also run my own business, freelance on the side, and explore other opportunities that align with my strengths and passions. Why? Because I refuse to limit myself to one thing.

As a business strategist and marketing expert, I’ve seen firsthand how unpredictable entrepreneurship can be. Some months, clients are pouring in. Other months, business slows. And for many women I speak to, those slower seasons bring fear and doubt. But here’s what I want you to know: There’s no shame in doing what you need to do to create stability for yourself and your family.

If that means getting a part-time job for benefits, do it.

If that means diversifying your income, do it.

If that means pivoting into something new, do it.

Society might try to put you in a box—telling you to stick to one thing, follow one path, and ignore the urge to explore. But the truth is, women are natural multitaskers. We juggle careers, businesses, families, and passions, all while making it look effortless (even if, behind the scenes, we’re running on coffee and sheer willpower).

Maybe it’s ADHD. Maybe it’s just who we are. Either way, we are powerful.

I learned this lesson from my father, who was both an entrepreneur and a business owner. He never relied on just one thing—he always had multiple skills, multiple income streams, and a mindset of adaptability. Because of that, no matter what happened, we always had something to lean on.

And now, I’m passing that wisdom on to my kids—and to you.

So, if you’ve been waiting for permission to try something new, this is it. Surround yourself with people who uplift you. Take risks. Be bold. Create that umbrella of opportunities so that when storms come, you’re covered.

You’ve got this.

With love,

Rochelle
